MACKEY,
JOHN Only the second strictly tight end to be inducted into the National
Football League Hall of Fame, John Mackey is regarded as one of the all-time greats
to ever have played that position. A
graduate of Hempstead High School and Syracuse University, Mackey played in the
National Football League for 10 years, nine years with the Baltimore Colts and
one year with the San Diego Chargers. He was elected to the Pro Bowl five times,
was a three-time All-NFL Player and played in two Super Bowls. His
outstanding athletic accomplishments earned him the title of the Best Tight End
in NFL history and placed him in the NFL Hall of Fame, with a career record of
331 catches, 5,236 yards, and 38 touchdowns. During his playing days, the power
of the 6'2", 225-pound John "Mack Truck" Mackey was known for his tremendous speed
and power. His courageous leadership on the field translated into his power as
President of the NFL Players Association which led to the historic strike resulting
in the free agency system and the solid pension and injury protection programs
now enjoyed by all NFL players. This NFL legend was named to the NFL's All-Decade
Team and the league's 50th Anniversary squad.
Mackey serves on the Board of Advisors to the Leukemia Society of America, Syracuse
University Business School and Board of Directors for the Syracuse University
Alumni Association. He is Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Community for
Education Foundation and its "Overcoming Obstacles" program, as well as a motivational
speaker for the NFL's team building seminars, "Coaching the American Family." |
