Mission
To create a healthy sports environment that advances the health and well being of Nassau County youth. The healthy sports environment provided by the Nassau County Sports Commission is built on two major pillars of health education and community-wide sports recognition.
History
The Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC) was established in 1992 as an organization dedicated to advancing the development of youth, amateur and professional sports on every level. Since its inception in 1992, the NCSC has brought more than 50 events and programs to the region, touching tens of thousands of individuals within the community. As the years have passed, the NCSC has seen its mission and programs evolve on many levels.
The Nassau County Sports Commission established the “Salute to Champions” Awards Dinner in 1995 as a way to recognize elite student athletes and coaches in Nassau County. This program continued to develop over the years as the event was expanded to include new awards such as the creation of the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and the establishment of Nassau County’s two national awards, the John Mackey Award in 2001 (awarded to the most outstanding tight end in college football and named after Roosevelt native John Mackey) and the Dick Schaap Award in 2002 (awarded to an outstanding sports journalist on the national level and named after the Freeport native Dick Schaap). This event is heralded by community members and Nassau County’s sports leaders. The NCSC will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Awards Dinner in 2009.
As the Nassau County Sports Commission moved into the new millennium, its programming continued to expand with the inception of the “Let’s Do It!” program in 1999. This revolutionary program gave underprivileged and at-risk youth the opportunity to receive instruction and participate in sports to which they would not traditionally be exposed. This program made a very strong impact on our community from 1999-2006.
The Nassau County Sports Commission has recognized new areas of need within our community. With the national and regional increase in childhood obesity, the NCSC has shifted its focus on providing a healthy sports environment for Nassau County youth through health education programs promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyle. These programs include the distribution of educational materials within our community and the construction of fitness trails in high usage Nassau County parks. In addition, watch out for our upcoming programs in 2009 including work with the AVP tour, Ringling Bros & Barnum and Bailey Circus and more!
