This
past fall, over 80 children from local youth organizations participated in the
martial arts program. The lessons are part of the Nassau County Sports Commission's
(NCSC) Let's Do It! Program, which is aimed at offering children the opportunity
to participate in sports. All instruction took place at the World Champion Tokey
Hill Karate facility in Port Washington, NY. World Champion Tokey Hill Karate
is made up of the finest world class instructors. The head instructor, Tokey Hill,
is a six-time National Karate Champion, two-time Pan American Karate Championship
Gold Medalist, and 1999 U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year. The
ten-week martial arts program is designed to not only train the children in the
time-honored traditions of Shotokan karate, but to be a great total-body workout
as well. The workouts are thorough; incorporating stretching, kicking, punching,
blocks, and kata (forms). The martial arts program is not only an exercise for
the body, but one for the mind. Discipline is the key to success in any pursuit
in life, and the martial arts can help develop these valuable skills. Some
children in the Let's Do It! Program have previously participated in the program,
continuing to advance in rank. Children from some youth organizations were recommended
to continue after the program is complete. Some of these individuals include:
David Washington (Soul Harvest Ministries), Samuel Dickerson (Soul Harvest Ministries),
and Patricia Jamerson (Soul Harvest Ministries). |
