(Manhasset, NY – May 1, 2008) The Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC) Annual Awards Dinner was held Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place, NY. The dinner honored elite athletes and coaches with roots in Nassau County. These awards were given out on the high school, collegiate and professional levels.
Olympic Gold Medalist and Malverne native Derrick Adkins, NY Jets quarterback and Oceanside native Jay Fiedler and NY Islanders legend and long time Manhasset resident Ed Westfall have all accepted their induction into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame. The nationally recognized John Mackey Award was presented to Chase Coffman (recently drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals) and the Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Sports Journalism was presented to Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press. Other notable award recipients included Long Beach native and starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals John Lannan, Chaminade High School graduate and Davidson Men’s Basketball head coach Bob McKillop and doping expert and Sands Point resident Gary I. Wadler, M.D.
An emotional highlight of the Awards Dinner was the third annual presentation of the James J. Regan Award to Robert Grabher of North Shore High School in memory of the Army Sergeant from Manhasset, NY. James J. Regan was a 1998 NCSC Outstanding High School Achievement Award recipient and this award is now presented annually to an exceptional male scholar athlete who best exemplifies Sergeant Regan’s love for sport, academic excellence, leadership ability and commitment to his community.
