Dwayne Allen of Clemson Named 2011 John Mackey Award Recipient 
Allen becomes the first ever Clemson Tiger in history to win a National Offensive Position Award

The John Mackey Award has been presented to twelve different schools in the past twelve seasons. 
Bethpage, N.Y. (December 8, 2011) - The Nassau County Sports Commission, sponsored by Briarcliffe College, has announced Dwayne Allen of Clemson as the 2011 John Mackey Award recipient. The Atlantic Coast conference junior recorded 48 receptions for 577 yards and eight touchdowns while leading fourteenth ranked Clemson to the 2012 Discover Orange Bowl. Allen becomes the first Clemson Tiger to capture the Mackey Award and participated in the live Mackey Award presentation on ESPNU at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show this evening. 

 

2011 was a banner year for Dwayne Allen. In addition to the Mackey Award he was also named All-ACC and established new single season team records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns by a Clemson tight end. Allen, who is well known for his blocking ability and receiving prowess, has totaled 91 receptions, 1,058 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in his three year career with Clemson. 

 

The John Mackey Award presented since 2000, lists ten NFL players as alumni: Dallas Clark ('01) of the 2006 Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, two-time Super Bowl Champion Daniel Graham ('02) of the Tennessee Titans, Kellen Winslow II ('03) of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers, two-time Super Bowl Champion Heath Miller ('04) of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Marcedes Lewis ('05) of the Jacksonville Jaguars, 2008 Super Bowl champion Matt Spaeth ('06) of the Chicago Bears, Fred Davis ('07) of the Washington Redskins, Chase Coffman ('08) of the Cincinnati Bengals, Aaron Hernandez ('09) of the New England Patriots and the 2010 John Mackey Award recipient D.J. Williams of the Green Bay Packers. 
 

The John Mackey Award is given to the collegiate tight end who best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics, and community values of NFL Hall of Fame Tight End John Mackey. The 2011 John Mackey Award recipient was determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Selection Committee.
