PARKS DEPARTMENT PROVIDES A RANGE OF ACTIVITIES
FOR FAMILIES DURING WINTER BREAK
During winter break, when children (and many parents) enjoy a week or more of vacation time, the inevitable question arises: What should we do? The Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums has some answers, with activities ranging from skating and swimming to an old-fashioned holiday celebration.
Skating: The County operates three skating rinks open seven days a week with both day and evening sessions. Christopher Morley Park (516-571-8123) in Roslyn-North Hills and Grant Park (571-7821) in Hewlett provide beautiful outdoor rinks and settings while Cantiague Park (571-7058) in Hicksville offers one of Long Island’s most popular indoor rinks and special “theme” nights on Fridays at 9 p.m. All three facilities will be closed for Christmas and New Year’s days.
Swimming: The Nassau County Aquatic Center (572-0501) at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow is one of the finest indoor swimming facilities in the nation and also provides a modern fitness center; it is open seven days a week, but will be closed Christmas and New Year’s days. For the period Dec. 15 - Jan. 31, the Aquatic Center offers a special “College Total Health Pass” for college students who are Nassau County residents. The pass provides unlimited access to the pool and fitness center during that time period for just $35 (a Nassau County Leisure Pass is also required; $25 fee).
Museums: Old Bethpage Village Restoration (572-8400), the recreated 19th-century Long Island village, returns with its family-friendly “Candlelight Evenings” holiday celebration featuring a Hallmark setting of flickering candles inside historic homes and old-fashioned entertainment. The event takes place Dec. 26 - 30 from 5 - 9:30 p.m. (as well as Dec. 20 - 21). Meanwhile, Garvies Point Museum (571-8010) in Glen Cove will be open over the winter break with films about dinosaurs, special programs, a winter hike on Dec. 31, and its regular exhibits about geology and Native-American life (Old Bethpage and Garvies will be closed Christmas and New Year’s days.
