BOB COSTAS HONORED WITH DICK SCHAAP AWARD

              

Manhasset, N.Y. (March 7th, 2005) - Bob Costas, one of the country's most honored and versatile broadcast journalists, has won the prestigious Dick Schaap Award for Excellence in Sports Journalism, presented annually by the Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC). The award will be presented at the Eleventh Annual Awards Dinner on April 11, 2005 at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place, NY.

The Dick Schaap Award was established in 2002 to honor the memory of one of America's pre-eminent journalists and broadcasters, Dick Schaap. The award is presented by the NCSC to the journalist, in any medium, that best exemplifies the spirit, principles and talents of Dick Schaap. Previous winners include Jim McKay of ABC Sports and Frank Deford of Sports Illustrated. The award recipient is determined by confidential balloting of the Dick Schaap Selection Committee, which is comprised of respected members of the media, and chaired by Dick's son, ESPN commentator Jeremy Schaap.

The Nassau County Sports Commission is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization created to make "America's First Playground - America's Best Playground" through sports. The NCSC operates numerous programs and initiatives and is noted for it's Let's Do It! program. This program features Let's Get Started!, which allows disadvantaged youth to participate in sports. BOB COSTAS

Costas, a 16-time Emmy winner and veteran of NBC, joined the network's sports division in 1980. He has hosted six Olympics and been involved in virtually every major sports event, including numerous World Series, NBA Finals and Super Bowl broadcasts. Costas also hosted the late night talk show, "Later with Bob Costas" on NBC from 1988 to 2000, where he demonstrated his versatility with guests from almost every profession. Costas joined HBO Sports in February of 2001 with the debut of the critically acclaimed "On The Record With Bob Costas," winning the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Studio Host in 2004. Costas is also the co-host of HBO's award-winning football program "Inside the NFL," cable's longest-running series. The program received the Sports Emmy Award this past April for Outstanding Studio Show - Weekly. He is also author of Fair Ball and co-author of numerous other books.
